Brunch Week: Puttanesca Scramble and Chive Spelt Biscuits

The Chef: Kailey

The Menu: A delectable brunch, taken straight from the pages of Vegan Brunch! Ms. Kailey treats us to two superb, savory dishes: the Puttanesca Scramble and Chive Spelt Biscuits. Both were highly delicious, and we could have sat and chatted for hours, as you're supposed to do at brunch. Then we remembered that there's this little thing called VegNews magazine that doesn't just make itself, so we got back to work.

The Goods: Welcome to Brunch Week! We're celebrating two things in the office this week, namely the recently released Vegan Brunch, and the return of our dear Ms. Abby as a full-fledged staffer! As you might recall, Abby has a thing for brunch, so putting the two together seemed like a natural fit. So, all this week we'll be making mouth-watering brunch recipes from the book. But wait, there's more! We'll also be giving away one copy of Vegan Brunch—signed by one Isa Chandra Moskowitz—every day! To throw your hat in the ring for today's copy, tell us in the comments: What's your preferred brunch M.O., sweet or savory?

Both! Especially when you can get both into one food item - like balsamic strawberry sauce, or green smoothies (I guess that's not really savory, but still!).

I like to go for sweet..pancakes or waffles topped with a fruit infused sauce, and a creamy soy yogurt parfait on the side.

Katerina said...

Totally depends on my mood! Recently more sweet flavours, lots of fruit and pancakes.

Aah, what a question. Something I struggle with every time. One of my favs is vegan pancakes with tofu scramble and soyrizo. The best of both worlds!

Elise said...

What an awesome giveaway! Thanks so much. I am definitely a savory brunch person, as long as I can have a tiny bite of maybe a scone to finish :).

Trista Hill said...

Actually more savory flavors for me, lately -- salt! Today's meal looks fantastic.

capnleela said...

definitely savory. tofu scrambles with lots of vegetables. herb biscuits or homemade bread. tofu frittatas. tempeh bacon. hash browns or roasted potatoes.

I'm a sweet kinda gal. Nothing beats Pancakes (or Waffles) with a nice warm fruit compote on top.

Most of the time: Savory. Occasionally I prefer sweet.

Marni said...

For brunch, I love enjoying both sweet and savory. I can do all sweet, but not all savory. There's got to be a dulcet accessory somewhere on the plate.

savory... especially if it's cold out or gloomy, or if i've had a little too much wine the night before! sweet if it's warm!

Definitely Savory

I am generally a savory girl, but for brunch, I like both sweet and savory.

Definitely savory! Mmm tofu scramble.

I am a savoury kind of girl. The choices and flavour combination are limitless.

PS - I can never say no to pumpkin-based baked goods.

Hmmm...such a toughie. I'd have to say it depends on what mood I'm in. Bagelwich with a soy sausage patty, lettuce, tomato, and toffutti cream cheese is delish but other days I need a little somethin' sweet like "fronch toast."

Savory with a bit of sweet on the side but definitely savory, I am a multi-course brunch fanatic. I'll start with a bit of fresh fruit, then a savory tofu, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes & onions scramble and hash browns. Then I finish with a sweet soy-latte & cookie. Of course, drinks include a Mimosa or Bloody Mary depending on the night before. Just love brunch & would love to have this book by Isa. Thanks.

courtneykorinne said...

It's not a real brunch to me if you don't get a little bit of both in there!

Lesley said...

My hubby (strictly a savory man) mocks me for having what he calls "dessert for breakfast". But oh Fronch Toast, how I need you...

Unknown said...

I love both for brunch! Tofu scramble, fake meat, vegan cinnamon roll....Yum!

I'm never very hungry in the mornings, so I tend to opt for sweet and eat something fruity like strawberries, bananas, or grapes.

hannah said...

it depends. i really love pancakes (sweet), but also tofu scramble (savory). oh, and muffins (sweet). i guess sweet wins.

megatarian said...

Weekday morning foods I tend to go with savory -- weekends I tend to go sweet.

Unknown said...

Both, they go great together!! This look so yummy!

oncewerewesties said...

I'd have to go for savoury... mmmm brunch....

beeps said...

i like sweet stuff - waffles with fruit!

and muffins. oh, i love me some muffins.

Sky said...

Sweet and savory together please. As in, vegan sausage with maple syrup. Mmmm.....

kelsi said...

Savory, definitely. Just like all of the salads at Zenith in Pittsburgh. Best brunch ever!

Anonymous said...

I like both! As in a sweet waffle with a good savory tofu scramble!

Foodeater said...

Definitely sweet, but I wouldn't say no to a tasty vegan sausage or something savory to go with my sweetness!

Allychristine said...

I like both!
Pancakes or waffles.........or a scramble/"egg" sandwich.

Courtney said...

Savory. No, sweet. Definitely savory. Can I just go with both? I really love biscuits. I mean, I really love them. I also love cinnamon rolls. I like it all. I want the chive biscuits in the picture, though. Nom, nom, nom!

Mary said...

Sweet with just a touch of savory. Perhaps a side of hash browns to go with my pancakes or waffles.

Angie Eats Peace said...

That is hard, but I think I lean more towards the savory side!

Diane said...

Sweet! Chocolate chip waffle is my favorite treat for a brunch. Surprisingly, my tastes have changed toward savory for everyday fare, but for the once a week splurge, no problem.

Madeleine Bistro. Cajun Caesar Sandwich, Dave's soup du jour of the day, beignets with fruit compote, and beet tartare.
Oh, did you say sweet or savory? Or did you say free-for-all?

JW said...

Sweet! I love savory for other meals, but brunch is all sweet.

Elizabeth Holli (Tampa Vegan Examiner) said...

Definitely savory! I also put the "unch" in brunch, favoring towards the lunch more than the breakfast.

Kris said...

Pudding!!! (qualifies as sweet). Made with avocado, banana, maple syrup and cocoa. YUM!!

Nikki said...

For breakfast I love sweet, but for brunch it's gotta be savory. Bring on the tempeh scramble!

birdfeed said...

While I definitely enjoy both, I'd have to say that sweet wins for me. Simple sweet though, like fruits, for example.

BBaker said...

I like a little bit of each - this morning I had a savory breakfast scramble with a sweet raspberry waffle :D

veggie365 said...

Both! Savory for the main meal and the sweet options like pancakes to serve as 'dessert'! YUM! Thanks for a great giveaway opportunity! :-)

If I had to choose I'd go for sweet. Like chocolate waffles sweet.

carrie said...

I like the combo of sweet and savory together.....Yummy sage vegan sausages douced with sweet maple syrup....yum

CulinaryAssassin said...

I definitely go for more of a sweet brunch. I love me some pancakes and French toast!!

Humboldt Honey said...

Mostly savory. Perhaps a thin-crust breakfast pizza with tempeh bacon and veggies, diced herbed potato hashbrowns, anise and pine nut scones, and sauteed apple slices. And mimosas.

CrazyVeganMom said...

hmmm, why limit yourself, I say both!

VR said...

I prefer my brunch savory. and if I'm feeling sassy, then throw in some spice! I'm talking hot chilis.... vegan is the sweet-ass-cherry on top! ;)

Krista said...

I have more of a sweet tooth and go for pancakes or waffles. Chocolate chip pancakes or chocolate chip waffles, if I had my choice. But, the perfect brunch would have a bit of savory too, like a little tofu scamble and some veggie sausage on the side. Yum!

hanashi said...

both: veg sausage w/ fruit compote/syrup
chive scone w/ sweetened cream or honey

the combinations can be endless!

nora said...

In general, I like sweet stuff better, but for brunch, if I had to pick, savory. But isn't the point of brunch to combine them!?

Yvonne said...

Sweet! Though that's probably because the savory options are usually meat or egg related. I bet Vegan Brunch would spice up the selection!!

Kirs10 said...

A little bit of both... mostly sweet such as a waffle with delicious thick maple syrup and veg sausage sitting in between the syrup and the waffle... mmm.

Unknown said...

It shifts for me -- some weekends I wake up and want something sweet; other times savory. For those latter days, both of these recipes sound great.

Tiffany said...

mostly savory with a little bit of sweet. Maybe some fruit to top off some biscuits, gravy and lots of yummy savory goodies.

awnree1 said...

I also think that I can have both Savory and Sweet for bunch (and from the looks of this book, it is entirely possible!). I don't want to have to choose.... I guess if I had to pick one, I'd picky .... savory!

Judy said...

Savory definitely. Tofu scramble with lots of veggies, or potatoes O'brien with vegan sausage, mushrooms and spinach tossed in. yummmmmm

Meghan said...

mmm...i love biscuits. and i love using grains other than straight up wheat. i can't wait to see get this book! isa does it again, eh?

Tina said...

I'm a sweet-tooth gal so I like to go for something sweet. That way it doubles as a weekend treat! :) Waffles or pancakes with cinnamon and agave syrup or fluffy scones with Tofutti cream cheese and jam.

mayapamela525 said...

TOo hard to decide! I'll take both!

Liv said...

Sweet! Fruit blintzes, oatmeal with tons of fruit and nuts, chocolate chip raspberry pancakes! Mm!

Unknown said...

I'm definitely siding with sweet. I can't pass up any take on vegan pancakes with a side of real maple syrup and sweet potatoes.

Emma said...

How about savory and sweet? That's the best. :)

And thanks for the book giveaways! Super exciting.

Unknown said...

Definitely savory. Tofu scramble or fritatta with plenty of veggies, potatoes, and vegan sausage. Maybe a scone or good bread with jam on the side. Yum!

Shaynee said...

Oh, I definitely love the sweet stuff for brunch! Bring on the pancakes, waffles and muffins!

Kathleen said...

I am all about the Savory Breakfast/Brunch...sweet in the morning makes me think about the sweet dessert I probably had the night before :)

camille said...

While i prefer sweet for breakfast- i prefer savory for brunch because it's more unusual for me & therefore special!

Nancy said...

Definitely savory! I usually go for the pasta opttion or some other lunch-ish dish. Not a big breakfast person.

Beau Andrew said...

I like me a hearty assortment of brunchy delectables, but when it comes to topping things like pancakes & waffles, the thought of soy whipped cream, fresh berries, and chocolate chips make me a sweet-lovin' guy!

nycitalini said...

Some yummy thick Belgian waffles dripping with warm maple syrup sounds soooo good right now!
I definitely have a sweet tooth!
However, for me the whole point of brunch is not to limit yourself. So when I think of brunch I always think of menu items that provide a balance of both sweet and savory vegan foods.

James B said...

Definitely savory. Sweet is only good in really small doses. I love a good potato based "scramble" with a rosemary garlic taste to it.

I prefer sweet as I am a big fan of pancakes/waffles, bananas and maple syrup.

the twins said...

definitely sweet! waffles or muffins are the best.

Nadine said...

Can I say...balanced? It's a luxury meal already, so let's go for the best of both worlds!
Such as...a mildly sweet waffle (something with seeds or lentils and maybe whole grain buckwheat)

or

Imitation chick'n with said waffles!
Mmmm....

I think I almost always would pick savory, but the bf would pick sweet. So, it's usually a combination. I would love to win this book!

I could go for either sweet or savory but usually I go for savory :) mm mmm!
